The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, JOHN MRABURE has confirmed one thousand eight hundred and forty four inmates were forcefully released during an attack on the Owerri Custodial Centre in Imo State yesterday.
In a statement, MRABURE ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident after he noted that the unknown gunmen stormed the facility and gained entry into the yard by using explosives to blast the administrative block.
The statement noted that the attackers came in several Hilux pick-up vans and Sienna Buses armed with sophisticated weapons before engaging security personnel in a gun battle.
The Correctional Services boss said operatives had commenced a search and recover operations to recapture the fleeing inmates, even as 6 inmates voluntarily returned to the facility while 35 inmates refused to escape from custody during the attack.
