A High Court in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State has sentenced a professor of the University of Calabar, PETER OGBAN, to three years in prison for announcing false election result during the 2019 general elections.
The professor who served as the returning officer in the senatorial election in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in 2019, was said to have manipulated results from Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas.
The prosecutor, INEC, told the court that Professor OGBAN altered the results of the election to favour the All-Progressives Congress, APC, against its main rival, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
In his judgement, Justice AUGUSTINE ODOKWO said the evidence before him was overwhelming and that the prosecuting counsel has proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
After pleas for mercy by the defense counsel and the accused, the judge ordered the accused to pay a fine of 100, 000-naira on the first count and sentenced him to three years in prison with no option of a fine.
